A big night out!

A big night out!

06 July 2022 by Justin Rush

Everyone likes a big night out!  Some glitz and glamour, a chance to dress up, to look your best, to enjoy some entertainment and fine food and drink… and maybe win an award.

This was the case for ten of the Abacus Careers team on June 30th.  Our ladies and gentlemen in all their finery, looking great for attendance at the Irish News Awards at Titanic Belfast.

Emma Coulter, our Operations Manager drafted an application in the category of ‘Best Wellbeing in the Workplace Strategy’ and we were very pleased to have been shortlisted with some equally prestigious local employers such as; Farrans, Henderson Group, Version 1 and more.

‘When I joined Abacus, one of my first projects was to review all of our people practices, we wanted to make sure our team understood management was here to support as much as possible.  I reviewed our practices and policies, then benchmarked them against the local market. Our offering was of a really high standard, but I was able to identify some further easy wins that kick-started the process’ stated Emma.

Abacus is a locally owned SME, it has been in operation since 2003 that operates in the recruitment sector. The business Directors like to be progressive and innovative, aiming to adopt cutting-edge people strategies as they evolve.  Policies for flexible working times, work-from-home/hybrid, extended leave, career breaks, etc were all in place before the pandemic arrived.  Therefore, the resulting post-pandemic operational changes were not difficult to adopt.

When it came to the application for this award Emma was able to reference some further enhancements to our people-focused wellbeing initiatives.  Formal items such as the introduction of a wide-ranging Employee Assistant Programme via WPA and enhanced Life and Healthcare Insurance cover.  But the really important aspects were the initiatives that built support, showed consideration and ensured everyone felt part of the whole: ‘Walk and Talks’, 5 Pictures, Breakfast by Directors, and much more.

Ultimately, Abacus Careers did not bring home any gongs last Thursday, our trophy cabinet has not been added to since 2019.  However, on this occasion, the journey has definitely been as worthwhile as the final destination.  Just look at all the previous events and activities we have pulled together in the last 6 months!
