His initial career was in the field of economic and business development, and along the way, collected BSc Geography, Post-graduate Diploma in Economic Development and an MBA (in Public Policy); all from the Ulster University.

Alan is married with two children, has built a house and travelled to many destinations, spending many years in South Africa. He is a major Manchester United fan and attended the Qatar World Cup in 2022. He also is an active swimmer and tennis player, enjoys cooking and spending quality time with the family.
