Embracing Equity: Celebrating International Women’s Day at Abacus Careers

08 March 2023 by Justin Rush

International Women’s Day is celebrated annually on March 8th to honour the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women worldwide. The theme for International Women’s Day 2023 is #EmbraceEquity. This campaign encourages the talking point of why ‘equal opportunity is no longer enough’ and that it can be rather exclusionary than inclusive.

Equality is often thought of as fairness and sameness and is based on the misconception that we all have the same needs, and the same solution will work for everyone. However, equity is based on access and opportunity, understanding diversity and the belief that we all have different needs to attain access and opportunity. Equity is about giving individuals the exact resources or opportunities that are needed to succeed.

The theme of International Women’s Day 2023, #EmbraceEquity, reminds us that we need to move beyond equality towards equity to ensure that everyone has access to the resources and support they need to succeed. At Abacus Careers, we are committed to creating a workplace culture of equity, inclusion, and diversity, and we believe that by doing so, we can make a positive impact on our staff and the wider community.

We asked our staff members how they felt about equity in the workplace, and here’s what some of them had to say:

“Since joining Abacus, I have felt that the directors have always supported me in the career progression I want to succeed to, they have encouraged and supported me through providing excellent support network and on the job training. They have always made me feel like there is “no question is silly to ask” – Hannah Bishop, Senior Recruitment Consultant

“I experienced Equity very early on with working for Abacus. Although we are a recruitment business, the directors made it very clear that their principles of progression, growth, and opportunities are for the entire Abacus team and not just for the recruitment team.  As an Operations Manager for Abacus, I have been working on a progression and career plan with my manager.  This has made me feel like a valued member of the team and I look forward to a long-term career with Abacus.” – Emma Coulter, Operational Manager

To celebrate International Women’s Day, we hosted a lovely coffee morning with plenty of baked goods and shared stories of women who inspire us in our personal and professional lives. We also fundraised money to go towards supporting women in our community.

We believe that by embracing equity, we can create a world that is fair, inclusive, and supportive of all individuals, regardless of gender or other demographic factors.
