Main reasons for leaving your current job: Poll Results

Main reasons for leaving your current job: Poll Results

05 June 2023 by Justin Rush

Last week we asked our candidate community ‘Which of these factors would make you change jobs in 2023?’ We provided five options to choose from and asked for one primary response, options were:

  • Increased salary (cost of living)
  • Poor management
  • Gain a promotion
  • Better work pattern (WFH/Hybrid)
  • Career change
  • Sample = 98 respondents

We gained responses from professionals across technology, accountancy, financial services, legal and HR disciplines – Thanks to all those that replied!

Here is a breakdown of our poll results:

  • 49% – Increased salary (cost of living)
  • 15% – Poor management
  • 8% – Gain a promotion
  • 24% – Better work pattern (WFH/Hybrid)
  • 4% – Career change

These results speak clearly to the pressures being brought forward by the increasing cost of living we are all experiencing. Nearly half of all respondents view ‘Increased salary’ as the main driver for a move in 2023. The next most popular choice, at just less than one-quarter of all responses, was ‘Better work pattern’. The remaining three responses made up approx one-quarter of the sample.

Perhaps these findings are not unexpected given the current situation. The question for all candidates on the market considering a move should be ‘Am I currently valued at the appropriate level for my skills and experience?’ Likewise, the main question for employers, keen to retain their staff, is ‘Are we valuing our team above the market rate at present?’

Failure to ensure this key item is correctly managed can cause issues for both parties. Abacus Careers has recently (April 2023) updated our salary guides for professionals based in Northern Ireland. Visit here for more https://www.abacus.careers/salary-guides/
