Mental Health and Wellbeing Month
02 June 2022 by Emma Coulter
After our very competitive stairs/floors challenge in April, we moved on to a mental health and wellbeing month for May.
Week 1 – Walk and Talks
We kicked off our wellbeing month with our very successful ‘walk and talks’. In pairs, we chatted with colleagues on a 30-minute walk in the lovely fresh air. Although, we didn’t predict it would still be so cold!
This is a great way to get us away from our desks, to connect with friends and get our step counts up for the day.
Week 2 – Book Club
The Abacus book club was launched! Studies have shown that reading as little as 6 minutes per day can improve your quality of sleep, reduce stress, and sharpen mental acuity. Reading strengthens the neural circuits and pathways of our brain while lowering heart rate and blood pressure
Cassie and 12 others voted for their first book and they chose Thinking, Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman.
I can’t wait to hear how everyone got on!

Week 3 – Wellbeing Morning and the Abacus Bake-off
Justin and Alan (mainly Alan) cooked up a lovely breakfast of pancakes with syrup and fruit or sodas and eggs!
Later in the morning, we enjoyed some coffee, a catch-up and lots of baked treats made by myself, Cassie, Hannah, Siobhan and Marc’s mum.
They were all so yummy but I definitely think my caramel brownies were the best, although Marc’s mum’s brownies were pretty special too!

Week 4 – WPA Presentation
We finished the month with a presentation outlining our benefits from our WPA healthcare provider and employee assistance programme.
This includes comprehensive healthcare, a 24-hour GP, unlimited therapies, a health and wellbeing hub, mental health cover, and much more.
